Programme of the Floraliën 2020
My Garden of Eden, a worldly garden
’My paradise, my worldly garden’ will be the theme of the next edition of the Floraliën. In our society people are increasingly looking for peace and quiet, for themselves and their personal garden of Eden. That paradise is somewhere else for each of us. Some find it in their green living room; others feel at their best in a park or their own garden. Wim Opbrouck will grace the campaign visual of the coming edition as an angle with wings of flowers. The actor fell completely in love with Ghent and in the past has clearly also made his mark on life in our city.
Other sources of inspiration for the theme are a print of the garden of Bishop Triest and the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by the Flemish master, Van Eyck. The print shows a kitchen garden and a pleasure garden with both indigenous and exotic plans. This sketches a picture of the migration of plants and flowers. Van Eyck painted the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb in our city, and millions of visitors come to admire his masterpiece every year. In 2020 the city of Ghent is celebrating master Van Eyck and the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb with numerous events. The centre panel of the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb depicts a heavenly mediaeval garden full of symbolism. It is a sumptuous setting of plants and flowers. Biologist Paul Van den Bremt and pharmacist Hilde Van Crombrugge can recognise no fewer than 75 different types of flowers. The colours of the work will flourish during the Floraliën in fairy-like displays. You can then also smell the flowers that appear in the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb.
The Floraliën is consciously opting for a permanently sustainable approach. We are therefore taking various measures to reduce the festival’s ecological footprint, step by step.
